ABSTRACT. The incidence and intensity of embryonic diapause in the striped ground cricket, Allonemobius fasciatus DeGeer (Gryllidae), is influenced by the date of oviposition and the incubation temperature. At 20C, embryos develop normally until the end of the appendage-formation stage when diapause occurs. The intensity of 'winter' diapause at this stage is greatest in eggs laid early in the season. Incubation at higher temperature induces a different and earlier 'summer' diapause. The higher the temperature the earlier the stage at which this developmental suppression is imposed. At 27 and 30C, some individuals develop without any interruption and hatch within 20 days. The proportion of these fast-developing eggs is low in summer but increases towards the end of the laying season. In nature, this species is univoltine and precocious hatching before winter is unlikely.
When embryos diapausing at an early stage at 27C are transferred to low temperatures, they resume development and enter winter diapause. The time required to reach the winter-diapause stage after transfer is inversely related to the temperature (30-30C). At 30C, sunmer diapause is neither induced nor maintained.  相似文献

The relationship between diapause and cold hardiness of the house spider, Achaearanea tepidariorum, differed geographically. In a cool-temperate population, enhanced chilling tolerance and supercooling ability were observed in diapause individuals, whereas a subtropical population showed only chilling tolerance. Because this spider is considered to be of tropical origin, it would follow that the ancestral diapause of this spider was equipped with chilling tolerance, but not with an increased supercooling ability. It seems that the ability to lower the supercooling point evolved through natural selection in the course of expansion of this species to the northern climates. Copyright 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd. Mechanism of Nitrite-Induced Germination of Clostridium perfringens Spores   总被引:5,自引:2,他引:3  
A study has been undertaken to understand the mechanism(s) of the nitrite-induced germination of Clostridium perfringens S40 spores. An increase in germination rates of the spores in response to increasing NaNO2 concentrations was entirely dependent on both pH and temperature of incubation. Low pH and high temperature were effective in accelerating the germination rate, the maximal germination level being reached at pH 4.0 and 60°C in the presence of 0.5 M NaNO2. On the basis of germination rate, the activation energy (μ) for the nitrite-induced germination calculated was approximately 9.9 kcal/mol. Germination was greatly stimulated after pretreatment of spores with DTT at pH 10.5 to remove the coats. Furthermore, cortical fragments prepared from spores of the same organism were lysed not only by lysozyme but also by NaNO2. Hexosamine-containing material was also solubilized by these reagents. However, nitrite, unlike lysozyme, released a considerable amount of free hexosamine as well. These results suggest that nitrite-induced germination may involve an interaction of sodium nitrite as nitrous acid with some component of the cortex. A possible mechanism of nitrite-induced germination is discussed.  相似文献

This paper reports an electron microscope study of typical and atypical spermatogenesis in the pond snail, Cipangopaludina malteata. In the typical spermatid the nucleus undergoes profound changes as development proceeds, affecting both its form and internal fine structure. A large number of roughly parallel, dense filaments, arranged along the long axis of the nucleus, fuse with each other to form in the end the homogeneous helical body characteristic of the head of the adult spermatozoa. The nebenkern is apparently mitochondrial in nature and, in its early development, is similar to that of insects except that it appears as a double structure from the beginning. As differentiation proceeds, the mitochondria lose their membranes, and the residual, now denuded cristae, reorganize to give a parallel radial arrangement. In the last stages of development, the nebenkern derivations become applied to the sheath of the middle piece in a compact helical fashion. In the development of the atypical spermatozoa, the nucleus fails to differentiate and simply shrinks in volume until only a remnant, devoid of DNA, is left. The cytoplasm shows numerous vesicles containing small Feulgen-positive bodies, 80 to 130 mmicro in diameter. These vesicles plus contents increase in number as spermatogenesis proceeds. The "head" structure of the atypical spermatozoa consists of a bundle (7 to 17) of tail flagella, each with a centriole at its anterior end. The end-piece of the atypical form appears brush-like and is made up of the free ends of the several flagella.  相似文献

为弄清光周期对一种亚热带蜚蠊(Periplaneta japanna)若虫发育的控制机理,检测了光周期对冲绳(26°N)和八丈岛(33°N)两个地理种群若虫发育的影响。结果表明,光周期显著影响两地理种群的若虫发育,然而,冲绳和八丈岛种群间显示不同的光周期反应模式。冲绳种群在长日条件下(LD16∶8h)若虫发育显著快于中间日长(LD14∶10h)和短日条件下(LD12∶12h)的若虫发育,孵化后60d或120d将若虫自LD16∶8h向LD12∶12h转移,若虫发育受到抑制,而自LD12∶12h向LD16∶8h转移,则促进若虫发育。八丈岛种群的若虫在短日条件下发育最快,其次是中间日长,长日条件下若虫发育最慢,孵化后60d或120d将若虫自LD16∶8h向LD12∶12h转移抑制若虫发育,反方向转移的若虫快速发育。两地理种群间不同的光周期反应模式可以认为是趋异进化的结果。  相似文献

Variants of serum transferrin in Japanese wild pig, Sus scrofa leucomystax, and Ryukyu wild pig, S.s. riukiuanus, of Japan were investigated by using starch gel electrophoresis. Five phenotypes, TfB, BC, C, CX and X, were observed, of which two, TfCX and X, are new variants. Comparison of gene frequency estimates which were calculated for each population showed remarkable geographic differences among several populations of these two subspecies.  相似文献

In vertebrates, melanin production is restricted to pigment cells. This cell type-specific melanogenesis is considered to involve cell type-specific expression of the tyrosinase gene. Recently, there have been several reports that sequences in the 5’ flanking region of the mouse tyrosinase gene are responsible for cell type-specific expression of the transgene in mice. As the first step in the study of the evolution of the regulatory mechanisms for tyrosinase gene function in vertebrates, we constructed a fused gene, hg-Tyrs-J which includes a 1.0-kb 5’ flanking sequence of the human tyrosinase gene fused with mouse tyrosinase cDNA. By introducing the fused gene into fertilized eggs of albino mice, we obtained two mice that exhibited pigmentation in the skin and eyes and established a transgenic line from one of them. Further analyses revealed that the transgene was expressed cell type-specifically in these transgenic mice. We conclude, therefore, that the 1.0 kb 5’ upstream region of the human tyrosinase gene contains conserved cis-elements essential for cell type-specific expression of the tyrosinase genes in mice and humans. Results of our study may provide a clue to elucidate the evolutionary process of regulatory mechanisms of the tyrosinase gene.  相似文献
